So frustrated

 Hi all

Another whinge, I am halfway through painting my Piano French Old Guard Grenadiers and thought I would paint the General Lasalle at the same time to add variety.

It was going pretty well until it came to doing the hussar braiding using Vallejo gold. What a nightmare, my old eyes couldn't follow the casting lines nor see the tip of the size O brush I was using. So I have to admit defeat on the fine detail and just accept I am not good enough to do the figure justice. it is so deeply frustrating.

Here is what the figure should look like (from Piano Wargames website, such an excellent job by Stephan Huber). I will post photos of mine when it is finished.

I thought I should add my figure as it is about 90% finished to the best I can.

  1. To be fair, you are tackling one of the most complicated Napoleonic character figures. I have been painting with one of those Optivisor magnifier glasses for years now and couldn't get by without them.

  2. Thank you Lawrence, your comment motivated me to add the photos above. I also use an optivisor type head magnifyer and light and it works well for most jobs but not here it seems.

  3. He looks perfectly fine to me Chris, even blown up to three times his actual size.

  5. He looks excellent Chris.
We are painting wargames figures, not a single figure to win a military modelling magazine competition. We all have our own style and limitations. The 'promotional' figures is painted 'perfectly', but is far to clinical, neat and clean to my tastes. Your version has much more character and style.
Mine never look as good as I'd hope, especially in photos, but it is the best that I can do. It is clear what they are intended to represent, they look fine at 1 m distance and to the naked eye!
    Best wishes, James

  6. Hi James.
Thank you for your kind comment, I had to smile as Lasalle is your chosen account icon. I admit that I am OCD in many ways and get frustrated when I compare my skills with others. I do try very hard to constantly improve my painting skills but my aged (74) eyes and hand control are going the other way. You are, of course, correct. On the table, they look fine but under the magnification of a photo every flaw is magnified. I just wish I was better.
Any news on your coming to brizzie?
    Cheers
    Chris

  7. Hi Chris, your work is fine. I have been struggling with vision of late and being too cheap to buy new glasses I bought a pair of clip on magnifying lenses that I saw when at a sewing shop with my wife. For $30 they are just the ticket and I can pick out the fine detail with ease, but they do take a little getting used to...with my bifocals I am holding the figure probably 150-200mm from my face, and adjudging back to full distances is strange.

    1. Hi Mark, thank you for your words, the finalised figure is in the next post. I use a head magnifyer with LED lights similar to an optivisor to see what I am doing whithout which I would have to give up the hobby.
