Bavarian Hussars finally finished

Well the Bavarian Hussar regement #1 is fnally done. I cannot imagine trying to paint any more hussars of any type as I am really not happy with my work here. I can blame it on the heat and humidity but in truth, my skills and eyesight are just not good enough to do the excellent Perry's figures justice. I admit that I took some liberties with some of the detail colours, I couldn't find a picture of a mounted officer or bugler for example so I improvised their uniforms, reversing the colours for the bugler etc. If anyone has accurate pictures of the officer and bugler (preferably mounted) I would love to see them.

How would you spent a hot and humid day, painting in the garage or cooling off here in my pool?

I used these prints as my guide on the figures, they were all I could find online.

I have started my next project, a battalion of French 9th line infantry. Infantry are so much easier and quicker to paint! Following them, my plans are a Bavarian artillery unit and the Victrix 58 figure Bavarian infantry bag I purchased as line and light regiments.

  1. Lovely work Chris. I think you'd go well with Perry sculpts as they have some nicely raised details and are bigger than the HaT figures. A swim in the pool sounds like a good idea but ours is like a warm bath at the moment.

    1. Hi Lawrence, thank you for your kind comment. Did you mean the Victrix Bavarians (which are a daunting prospect at the moment)?

As for the pool, yes it is a it more like a hot tub, the water temperature has rarely gone below 30C this summer so we have to juggle evaporation in the heat v letting the water cool a bit overnight (we have a solar pool blanket) v letting the water evaporate and let the pool fill up with the downpours we are gettiing. This summer has been uncharted territory in so many ways.

  2. Great figures and lovely basing Chris! You can't beat seeing Hussars on the table - just so much dash to them. As for the pool - it looks very nice, I think that sure beats being stuck inside trying to paint in the heat you have.

It's howling a proper storm outside in the UK at the moment. I think the window wants to blow in on me - hope the glass doesn't land on the painting desk if that happens! :-D

    1. Hello Jason, I wish I could send you some of our heat (39C today with 70% humidity - even the pool is hot!), I remember well UK winters and, although I am complaining about this heat, I would not swap temperatures with you. At least I don't crash the car on black ice here like I did in England.

Thank you for your kind words on the figures, I agree that hussars look fantastic but they are so hard to paint well (mine aren't) so I did take more time than usual with the bases to try to improve the overall look.

  4. I think you're being overly harsh on yourself, these look good to me and hussars are just fun, mine are bashed out rapidly and we all have to take some liberties or we would go mad, have fun with your line regiment, I've got some with a bit of paint on but I need Austrian Infantry more!

    1. Thanks Iain, I do like the concept of Confederation of the Rhine v Austro-Hungary as would have happened as part of the great battles of the period. It makes a different wargaming scenario and a nice contrast on the battlefield from blue and red.

  5. I agree with the others and beg to differ with your good self; the figures look excellent and the overall effect is a beautifully colourful and animated wargames unit. Top notch!

    1. You are too kind James, I suppose I am driven to have figures as near as possible to those superb ones I see online and in magazines. I never can of course as my 73 year old eyes and shaky arthritic hands are not up to it but I strive to be the best I can be. As you must know, I get 90% of my enjoyment from this hobby in the 'look' of my figures and see a wargame as a moving diorama. As I can only solo game (no-one else I have found in Brisbane into Napoleonics) my games are few and far between. I am planning Bavaria v Austria then Bavaria v France (1813) games with Valour and Fortitude rules after I have finished my Bavarian infantry.
